Remembering: Does Anybody Even Know Who Jesus Is?
This is an entry I posted on 27 February, 2007:
There's a lot of controversy brewing right now over the alleged discovery of the ossuaries containing the remains of Jesus and various members of his family. While I don't know any Christians that are even giving this a second thought, as I read the news and listen to what's being said, it's dawning on me just how ignorant many people are to Who Jesus even is! I suppose it could be argued that I've lived a fairly sheltered existence since I became a Christian over five years ago. Most of that time has been spent working in Christian ministry surrounded by other like-minded people, so I haven't been exposed to the rumors and misunderstanding that surround the Person of Christ. To hear what's being said - some even questioning whether there ever was a person named Jesus - makes me question the poor job His followers have truly been doing. Many of the most vocal people spotlighted in the media right now aren't even scholars but people speaking from their own experience... an experience that doesn't include a relationship with Christ and evidently doesn't even include a Bible. As American's are prone to do, we'll see what our local celebrity thinks before we make a decision for ourselves. A simple search on google will show you what I'm talking about. When someone asks a question about the Biblical account, these are the people who spring forward with an uneducated answer and many times there's a smugness when they think that finally the Christians will be put in their place. I'm not really angry at them though, they're saying what they believe to be true. The ones I'm really angry with are the Christians. Where have they been? Jesus stated in the Great Commission that his disciples were to "go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." ... so what have they been doing that there are so many people in America of all places who don't even know Who He is!?! Many of them are too busy right now. Too busy protesting movies that are too sexy and books that describe magic. Too busy picketing abortion clinics and fighting gay marriage. Too busy trying to show the world that to be a Christian is to have the final say no matter who gets hurt. I agree that it's important to live a life of holiness but we can't force our beliefs on the population at large - we need to share the good news one person at a time. And if the Christian community can't be counted on to share the truth of Christ, people will look someplace else for the answers. I'm not pointing the finger because I'm as guilty as anyone. No, I've not made myself vocal in very many protests, but the same can be said for sharing the Gospel. I love my neighbor pretty well, but maybe I can do more. Maybe I can love a little more, pray a little harder and share my faith with a few more people. It's "Good News" but that gets lost in the shuffle... and people get lost as a result.
It really is Good News but for some reason we don't make it sound so good. Too many Christians get caught up in living a "Holy Life" and the focus shifts toward that. It comes to the point where they're so busy looking for problems they have no time to figure out solutions. Instead of sharing grace and mercy they point toward sacrifice and obedience - still a part of the Christian walk but not something that a person can convict another of... and it's certainly not where Jesus began.
It's time to stop condemning the world and love instead.
