Glad to be Gay
It's a slow news day but I guess things could be worse, eh?
Rather than not posting anything, I thought I'd share a video I found yesterday while doing some "homework" for a friend. He called me to find out what the good side to being gay is. Since he's gay himself, I thought it interesting that he couldn't come up with an answer... but then I thought about it...
I think there's a lot to be said for being honest about who you are and having the integrity to be true to self. I think there's even a Christian precedent in the idea that God created people to be real and authentic - and I think it's a sin when people try to sell themselves short. But that's not really the reason why it's good to be gay... that's why it's good to be honest.
I suppose it could be argued that to be a recognized minority is good because that group can then be protected - but that's a rather backhanded positive, isn't it? The only reason the protection is necessary is because there's someone else trying to do that population harm. Not really a reason why it's good to be gay... but it does demonstrate why it's good to be recognized and protected.
I even considered the idea that gay people are the most fun to have at a party, they've got impeccable taste and they've got their finger on the pulse of pop culture. But that's just a series of stereotypes that make gay folks a cartoon... and a cartoon is the way the rest of the world tolerates a community they don't understand. That's definitely not a reason why it's good to be gay...
So why is it good to be gay?
For the same reason it's good to be straight. Or man. Or woman. Or black. Or white. Or however else we identify.
It's who we are... and being who we're meant to be is always a good thing.
Anyway, here's the video I found during my search for the answer. This is a video for the song "Glad to be Gay" which was originally written by Tom Robinson for a London Gay Pride march in 1976. It's a pointed song that deserves to be heard and considered. Enjoy:

that's a good thought...
