Remember Who Made You

While in Philadelphia this weekend I had the pleasure of watching Jeffrey Barnes perform... actually he's the reason I was in Philly...

I met Jeffrey almost two and a half years ago at a gay Christian conference in Orlando where he performed his first one man show "Remember Who Made You."  The show was a series of vignettes featuring different people coming to terms with sexuality and faith, whether a father concerned about his son being a sissy or a teen coming to terms with his sexuality in the midst of an opinionated family - the portrayals were honest and touching.

This weekend, he performed his new show "And He Ran Screaming," a more autobiographical show touching on the idea of what would happen if the man he is today were to come in contact with the boy he was at 16.  With humor woven throughout, Jeffrey was able to evoke past experiences in a way that made them all too real... it was both scary and comforting to see bits of my own life in the midst of his story.  It was particularly gratifying to hear the discussion that followed as one person after another was able to share their own experiences dealing with these same concepts.

I recommend these shows to anyone interested in trying to start a dialogue about what it looks like to reconcile faith and sexuality.  Check out his web site for more information or to book a show and let him know you heard about him here!
