Vote No on Prop 8

For those who don't know what's going on in California, there is an Amendment that has been proposed for the 2008 California General Election ballot called Proposition 8.  Essentially, what this does is modify the state constitution so that it reads "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."

What this means is that the Supreme Court's ruling in favor of same-sex marriage earlier this year–and all the same-sex marriages that have been held since then–would become null and void.  I'm reminded of the comment Senator Brian Lees (an original sponsor to the amendment to ban same-sex marriages in Massachusetts) made after it was made legal in his state: "Gay marriage has already begun, and life has not changed for the citizens of the commonwealth with the exception of those who can now marry."

This is the story in California and to pass such an amendment there would not only be denying rights–it would be taking them away!

I was recently directed to the web site www.equalityforall.com where they are trying to raise money to help stop Proposal 8.  The web site has a lot of useful information including ways to take action for justice and stories of those who have been directly affected.  They also have this video that I found touching:

You don't have to be a California citizen to have your presence felt as financial contributions and petitions will help show that this is something bigger than just one state.  If you don't know where you stand on the issue, I encourage you to learn so that you can be informed.  After all, this is why we have democracy.
