My First Night in the New Apartment
I'd hoped to post this entry yesterday, but when I'm done with it, I think it will become evident why I didn't...
Yesterday was the first night I spent in my new apartment. I went to the place I'd be staying and packed up the last of my things, figuring I'd take them to the apartment, go back and get my groceries, and be back at my apartment with enough time to run to the store and get a few things I need (like dishes and flatware).
The plan started alright. I managed to pack the last few remaining things in my car in less time than I thought. The trunk was full and the back seat was almost full, but this is the stuff that I've been using on a regular basis since I've gotten to Indy and I didn't think it would all fit in a backpack.
I'd previously called my building manager to let him know that I needed a screen put into the window of my bedroom so that I'd be able to sleep there without the fear of creepy-crawlies and bats coming in during the night. See, there's no a/c at this place so I knew I'd need to sleep with the windows open. When I arrived there was still no screen, but the manager found another one I could use if I wanted to put it in myself. I'd done it once already when I first began bringing things to the apartment so I felt fairly confident that I'd be able to do it again. What I didn't consider was the fact that the window doesn't stay open - I need to prop it when I want a breeze. What it came down to was me trying to put a screen in while simultaneously holding the very heavy window up with my shoulders, my chest, my chin... whatever I had free at the moment. I finally managed it but I was dripping with sweat when it was done.
I brought almost everything in from the car and I had just two more things to bring in from the trunk. I locked the car doors and stuck the key in the trunk when I felt something go wrong. It seems the key only was only halfway in the lock when it started to turn and what I pulled back was a bent and cracked key. No matter, I had a spare... I only had to find it. I raced back up to the apartment and went through every box I had. I finally had to admit that my spare key was in one of the boxes in the trunk and I would need someone to let me in to get it.
After calling the police (who would help me get into my car in State College but not in Indianapolis!) and a locksmith, I remembered that I have AAA so I called them and they offered to send someone out to help me... within an hour. By this time it was later than I'd hoped but I didn't have much choice so I sat on the curb and waited. My guy arrived eventually and it took him all of about two minutes to get into my car where I could pop the trunk and retrieve my key!
I unpacked the last of my boxes, drove back to the first apartment and gathered my groceries. I had about two bags of refrigerated stuff and two bags of cupboard stuff... I'd need to add to this soon. I brought them back to my new place and put them away before I began doing a little cleaning. By now it was nearly midnight and I just didn't have the energy to do more so I took a shower and put some sheets on the floor (I'm still without a bed... *sigh*) and I tried to fall asleep. I finally managed a little over four hours of sleep before I got up and started my first morning routine in my new apartment. I was marred by the fact that my refrigerator doesn't seem to be working so the milk was not very good... and the rest of my stuff is on the way out.
The other treat was the realization that when I shower in the bathroom a puddle forms in the kitchen. I'm trusting that these things will be fixed soon and I'm hopeful that this will start to feel like a "home" soon...
... it's still a great little apartment...
