Would You Accept Twenty Dollars?

This is a true story as told by Jake Nelson of Response Church.  He shared it tonight (this is my paraphrase):
Jake and a friend decided to find out what would happen if they went up to a stranger and offered them twenty dollars.  The first day they went to a local mall food court and approached three well-dressed business men as they were discussing the stock market or whatever it is that well-dressed business men discuss over lunch.  The two placed the money on the table in the midst of them and said, "I'd like to give you this twenty dollar bill."

The immediate response from Man One was: "What are you up to?"

Jake's response went something like: "Nothing.  We saw you sitting here and we want to give you this twenty dollar bill."

Man Two piped up, "What do you want from us?"  Man Three was looking nervously toward the security guard trying to get some attention while Man One finished with a curt, "We don't want your money."

Jake again responded with, "We don't want anything from you.  This is a gift.  We just want to give you this twenty dollar bill.  Before we leave, we just want to make it absolutely certain that none of you wants this twenty dollar bill."

Man One spoke up again indignantly.  "What are you up to?  Take your money and get outta' here!"

So, before the security guard could make his way over to escort them out of the food court, Jake and his friend left.

The next day, they went to a toy store.  After talking to the mother of a small boy - and assuring her that they were indeed not crazy - they went to the boy who was admiring a game and told him that they wanted to buy this for him.  They made the purchase and returned quickly to give the gift to the boy.

His response:  "Thank you."

He then went to the rest of the children he was with and excitedly told them about his good fortune and how they'd all be able to join him in playing with his new game as soon as they got home.
So it is with forgiveness.  God gives us the gift of his Son to atone for our sins.  We can decide to respond like the businessmen with skepticism and doubt, wondering what the catch is and allowing our pride to prevent us from accepting something so simple - or we can accept it like the little boy with a heartfelt thank you and the excitement that we can't contain as we share our gift with others.

What will you do with this gift this Christmas?
"I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it." - Mark 10:15 (NIV)

Good stuff dude, you are a regular ol' preacher man! lol. Don't be ashamed of the word Christian, seek to change the modern understanding of a term thrown around way too often. Good stuff man, I enjoyed your blog so far.

Adam, I think it's funny that you credit me with being a "preacher man" when I'm retelling someone else's sermon! Glad you're checking the site out though and I'm also digging yours... I look forward to chatting over coffee/tea sometime...
