Top Twenty Christmas Songs (Part One)

Originally, this entry was going to be a list of my "Top Ten Favorite Christmas Songs"... but as I expected, I couldn't narrow it down to just ten.  It doesn't help that Christmas music in general is some of my favorite music (though it doesn't seem to be a feeling shared by most of the people I know), but when you factor in the different versions of familiar songs (Aretha Franklin singing Winter Wonderland) and the classic tried-and-true songs that the holiday's not complete without (Bing Crosby's White Christmas), the task becomes even more difficult.

So here it is, in no particular order and attempting to make a well-rounded effort, the first quarter of my "Top Twenty Favorite Christmas Songs."

Christmas Wrapping - The Waitresses
The Waitresses were a short-lived band in the 80s New Wave scene, but what they lacked in longevity as a band they made up for with this timeless classic.  The song tells the story of a woman who has spent a year trying unsuccessfully to connect with a guy she met the year before.  By Christmas Eve she's given up hope but a serendipitous mistake causes her to run into the man she's been chasing all year - and she decides not to give up on the magic of Christmas.

Santa Claus is Coming to Town - The Supremes
I couldn't make a list of favorite songs without including the Supremes!  There are actually a few songs I could've chosen - O Holy Night, Oh Little Town of Bethlehem, My Christmas Tree, Children's Christmas Song - but I selected this for it's particularly Motown sound.  From the first drum beat, the funky rhythm, perfect harmonies by Mary and Florence ("Look out Santa's comin', comin')', to Diana's ad lib at the end, this song is pure 60s Detroit.  As usual, Motown knows how to do it right.

Christmastime is Here - Vince Guaraldi Trio
Vince Guaraldi was the official musical sound of The Peanuts and A Charlie Brown Christmas (both the television special and the soundtrack) has become a staple of the holidcay season.  While this is only one of any of the tracks from the album I could have chosen, it's also the first thing you hear on the cartoon special... and for me, it's music I can hear over and over during December and never get tired of it.

All I Want for Christmas is You - Mariah Carey
The first time I heard this song I thought it sounded like a classic Christmas recording, and my opinion hasn't changed.  Originally released in 1994, this song has continued to chart solidly during the holidays and I know I have a hard time sitting still when I hear it come on the radio.  I'm not particularly a fan of Ms. Carey herself, but she did good when she put this song together and she set the bar for what it looks like to create contemporary Christmas classics.
*NOTE: This review is not for the subsequent remixes that have been made of this song. meh.

Ding Dong Merrily on High - Roger Whittaker
My grandfather first introduced me to the music of Roger Whittaker when I was in middle school.  I can remember sitting in the living room of my parents' house reading a book and listening to the Roger Whittaker Christmas cassette over and over again until I eventually wore the thing out... I've since purchased it on cd twice.  While I realize my strongest connection to this music are the memories of my grandfather, it's a timeless sound that can make it feel like Christmas anywhere.
