Haldo Takes a Stroll

For a long time I've wanted to break into illustrating children's books - I think some of the art you find there can be some of the most amazing art anywhere, and a good children's book artist can help instill an appreciation of art in kids at a very early age... and it can be a very potentially lucrative field!

To my thinking, good children's art needs to be creative and catchy.  It's usually colorful (though not necessarily - the next piece I do may not be nearly so colorful) and my favorite art has something quirky about one or more elements.  Most important, it needs to be engaging so it's young readers will want to come back and visit it again and again.

I've made many attempts over the years to create something for my portfolio that would qualify as good children's art and I've actually made a couple of successful attempts, but I usually lose my wind halfway through the process and I've got stacks of incomplete drawings that will attest to this poor habit.  This week I decided to stick to my guns and pursue a single piece to it's completion (there were many points I almost threw in the towel) and I think the piece I've ended up with is a good solution... and I learned a lot in the process.

Without further ado, here's my week's accomplishment.  It's a color pencil drawing of Haldo walking through Candyland (you can tell by the multi colored trees)... I'm not sure if he always carries the cane, but he did on this particular day - and he seems to be happy for it!:

Let me know if you have any ideas for ways to make it better or if you have concepts that might be nice to turn into children's art...  I'm always looking for inspiration.

How do I "Like" this entry?

One of my nieces favorite books since she could barely speak is Shel Silverstein's Runny Babbitt... no color! You just never know with kids.

I actually came to The Art Institute for my web design degree because I illustrated a children's book and was not pleased with it. I believe the next one I do will be much better for my time at the school!

And you are right... the art in children's books is amazing and very underrated in the art world. I find it inspiring.
