My Independence Weekend
Today is the first day back after a three day weekend and, as can be expected, it's not easy to get back into the swing of things. I'm not sure what it is about that third day without work that throws everyone off, but I know I'm not alone in this thinking. Maybe it takes three days for our bodies to realize we work too hard and that's when the revolt begins - if we stick to a usual two-day weekend we never realize what we're missing, but as soon as we take that extra day it's all over.
This weekend was a break for me in another way, too - for the last three days I've been without my laptop. Yes, I did have computer access and I did check my email, but I was unable to bid on new projects or work on current projects because all my files were at home. I thought about taking my laptop with me, but then I decided against it because it was supposed to be a holiday weekend... not a work weekend.
So what did I do?
I drove to Orlando to visit my parents. I left on Saturday morning and on the way I stopped at a new Starbucks where I sat and read for an hour and a half (I wasn't timing myself - I didn't have a schedule to keep). Then I got to their house and enjoyed an afternoon of conversation, reading, and delicious food. I think I checked my email once... but maybe not.
The next day we spent at Walt Disney World Epcot Center where we enjoyed lunch at the Rose & Crown restaurant (fish & chips and mushy peas) and a leisurely stroll around the park. Then we skipped the fireworks and went home to watch a movie.
Finally, yesterday was spent setting up my parents' Wii Fit and playing with that before taking an afternoon trip to Starbucks followed by an unexpected nap. Then I drove to Clermont and got lost, but that's another story... the point is that it was fine that I got lost - I didn't have a schedule to keep and there wasn't anywhere I needed to be.
... and I didn't miss my computer.
Of course, this afternoon as been spent catching up on some of the things I missed over the last three days... but the truth is that I really didn't miss anything. I actually enjoyed a few things I would've missed if I'd stayed in front of my laptop. I guess that's something to consider next weekend.
